Community Development

In collaboration with United Nations Development Programme, NFD has worked on community development in Makamba Province (south Burundi) improving road infrastructure and reinforcing the local economy through enhancing palm oil production.

Road communications were re-established for one corner of the province bordering Lake Tanganyika and Tanzania by constructing a road bridge which had been destroyed by repeated flooding and repair of the access road to this bridge.

In order to improve palm oil production in this area, 360,000 young palm trees were distributed and palm plantation tracks were restored. NFD constructed the first mechanical palm oil extraction unit in Makamba thereby enormously enhancing the daily extraction rate.

At the other end of the country in the provinces of Cibitoke  and Bujumbura Rural NFD has helped  rural communities with house-building, provision of toilets, provision of solar panels (and training for their maintenance) provision of  clean water, cultivation of fruit trees, bee keeping and literacy classes as well as instruction on a number of topics such as HIV/AIDS.
