Education
Youth Training
NFD has trained 178 young people aged 12 - 25 on its youth training programme where they have learned a trade as a car mechanic or seamstress. Some have also received literacy training.
The young people all come from vulnerable backgrounds such as demobilised child soldiers, teenage prostitutes and some are street kids; most have lost at least one parent and several are responsible for a number of younger siblings.
The programme has been developed to incorporate a sewing workshop where a number of the girls trained on the programme produce goods mainly for the export market.
A garage is currently under construction which will undertake vehicle maintenance and repairs; it will also function as a training location for youths to learn the trade.
It is planned to introduce the youth training programme into the nearby Central Prison where there is a significant group of young detainees who would benefit from learning a trade and being kept usefully occupied.
Primary Education
At its multifunctional site in a southern suburb of Bujumbura, NFD has started building a primary school which will serve the local community of mainly poor families.
